The pictures of a virgin ceremony have gone viral on the internet, as young girls are tested by the village elders before being sent off to their husband’s house.
On Saturday, December 3, in Ogu, Rivers state, ‘The Virgin’ ceremony also called the Iria ceremony is a tradition which every girl, from the community, must go through before being given out in marriage. The girls are usually critically screened by elders in the community, before being allowed to participate in the ceremony.
According to the pictures, some ladies were stripped and had their bodies designed in colors while some were fully clothed. The ceremony did not end until certificates were given to the ‘virgins’.
